12:16-20 The Parable of the Rich Fool

SURROUNDED BY WEALTH, BLIND TO CHARITY. CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: What does the rich man do, surrounded by a great supply of many blessings beyond all numbering? In distress and anxiety, he speaks the words of poverty. He says, “What should I do?”… He does not look to the future. He does not raise his eyes to God. He does not count it worth his while to gain for the mind those treasures that are above in heaven. He does not cherish love for the poor or desire the esteem it gains. He does not sympathize with suffering. It gives him no pain nor awakens his pity. Still more irrational, he settles for himself the length of his life, as if he would also reap this from the ground. He says, “I will say to myself, ‘Self, you have goods laid up for many years. Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.'” “O rich man,” one may say, ‘You have storehouses for your fruits, but where will you receive your many years? By the decree of God, your life is shortened.'”

“God,” it tells us, “said to him, ‘You fool, this night they will require of you your soul. Whose will these things be that you have prepared?'” COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY 89,

PHILIPOVKA

Like the Christian West, the various Eastern rites of the Church observe the weeks before Christmas with spiritual preparation and prayer. In Western Christianity this is called Advent — a word derived from Latin for “coming, arrival,” a translation of the Greek “Parousia.” But among Eastern Christians — both Catholic and Orthodox — this season is known as the Nativity Fast. So, while Advent begins on Nov. 1st this year for Catholics, the Byzantine custom is observed from Nov. 15 to Dec. 24. It is also known as Philip’s Fast because it begins on the day following the feast of the apostle St. Philip on the Eastern liturgical calendar, Nov. 14.

THE REASON JESUS HEALS HER WOMB.

EPHREM THE SYRIAN: “Who touched me? For a power has gone forth from me.” A detail such as this is not reported about our Physician in any other place. This is because in no other place did our Physician encounter an affliction such as this. This affliction was presented to many physicians, yet only one Physician encountered this affliction to heal it. Many physicians encountered and wearied her. Only one encountered her who was able to give her rest from the toil of many physicians. The art of healing encountered a shameful affliction but added pain after pain to it. The more they came, the worse the affliction got. The fringe of the Lord’s cloak touched her and up-rooted this suffering from its root. She perceived within herself that he healed her affliction. Since the art of healing clothed with all our practical wisdom was reduced to silence, the divinity clothed with garments was proclaimed. He clothed himself in the body and came down to humanity, so that humanity might loot him. He revealed his divinity through signs, so that faith in his humanity alone could not be explained. He revealed his humanity that the higher beings might believe that he was a lower being, and he revealed his divinity so that the lower beings would accept that he was a higher being. He took on a human body so that humanity might be able to attain to divinity, and he revealed his divinity so that his humanity might not be trampled under foot. 23rd Sunday After Pentecost

Conquer Satan

Make an effort , then, to meet more frequently to celebrate God’s Eucharist

and to offer praise. For, when you meet frequently in the same place, the

forces of Satan are overthrown, and his baneful influence is neutralized by

the unanimity of your faith. Peace is a precious thing: it puts an end to

every war waged by heavenly or earthly enemies.

-A new air-conditioner and two new furnaces will be installed this fall by Gault at a cost of $25,341.79.

22nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

St. Ephrem the Syrian – The Lord compared the priests of the people with him who was clothed in purple. Nothing is more honored than purple clothing. He compared the disciples of the cross with Lazarus. There were none more lowly than Lazarus was. He revealed the names of his beloved ones through Lazarus, his beloved one. He also wished to reveal the name of his enemies through the words, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets.” It is not the case that all those living are alive, or that all those buried are dead.

Jesus Christ The Sower

Saint Theophilus the Confessor, Archbishop of Bulgaria, teaches:

“He came out of the bosom of the Father, from invisibility, and became visible. He who always sows came out. Because the Son of God does not stop always sowing in our souls. The Lord sows through preachers who proclaim the truth, not their own, but inspired by the Spirit of Truths, sowing the seeds of the saving teaching of Christ. The apostles sent by the savior to preach went all over the world announcing the Gospel of the Kingdom to all creation. They did not announce their own teaching, but announced to everyone the Divine teaching, announced to them by the Lord Himself, who guided them to all truth, making them mystics. The work of the preaching of Christ’s apostles was continued by the holy martyrs and confessors, who glorified the crucified and risen Christ not only with their prayers, but also with their pious deeds. Their banner was taken up by the saints of Christ, the holy fathers and teachers of the Church… the holy and the righteous, each sowing seeds in his [or her] own field The gracious word of God.”

Every parish has received an icon specially written for this program- “The Call of the Disciples.” Those who accept the icon agree to pray daily during that time for religious and priestly vocations. Council Of Nicea II

“But since some find fault with us for worshipping and honoring the image of our Savior and that of our Lady, and those, too, of the rest of the saints and servants of Christ, let them remember that in the beginning God created man after His own image. On what grounds, then, do we show reverence to each other unless because we are made after God’s image? For as Basil, that much-versed expounder of divine things, says, the honor given to the image passes over to the prototype. Now a prototype is that which is imaged, from which the derivative is obtained. Why was it that the Mosaic people honored on all hands the tabernacle which bore an image and type of heavenly things, or rather of the whole creation? God indeed said to Moses, Look that thou make them after their pattern which was showed you in the mount. The Cherubim, too, which overshadow the mercy seat, are they not the work of men’s hands? What, further, is the celebrated temple at Jerusalem? Is it not hand-made and fashioned by the skill of men?”

PILGRIM VOCATION ICON PROGRAM:

“The Call of the Disciples” Pilgrim Vocation Icon Program: Our Lord reminds us that “the harvest is truly plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray, therefore, the Lord of the harvest that he sends laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38). As Christian faithful we all have a responsibility to foster future leaders of the Church-priests, deacons, nuns and monks-dedicated to serving God’s people. One way we can be involved in the nurturing of vocations is to pray. Next Sunday begins a special time of prayer for vocations for the Byzantine Catholic Church in the United States. Every parish has received an icon specially written for this program. Those who accept the icon agree to pray daily during that time for religious and priestly vocations. Every member of the parish is invited to have “The Call of the Disciples” icon in their home for a week of special prayer for vocations. Prayer booklets are provided. The Secret of the Peace We Need

Those who are engaged in spiritual warfare must always keep their hearts tranquil. Only then can the mind sift the impulses it receives and store in the treasure house of the memory those that are good and come from God, while rejecting altogether those that are perverse and devilish. “When the sea is calm, the fishermen’s eyes can see the movements of the fish deep down, so that hardly any of them can escape. But when the sea is ruffled by the wind, the turmoil of the waves hides from sight the creatures that would easily have been seen if the sea wore the smile of calm. The skill of the fisherman is of little use in rough weather. Something of the same sort happens with the soul, especially when it is stirred to the depths by anger. At the beginning of a storm, oil is poured on the waters to calm them, and in fact the oil defeats their commotion. In this way, when the soul receives the anointing of the gift of the Holy Spirit, it gladly gives in to this inexpressible and untroubled sweetness. And even if it is continually attacked by temptation, it maintains its peace and joy.
