Mother’s Day

Once upon a time, there was a child ready to be born. So one day he asked God: “They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?” God replied: “Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you.” Said the child, “But tell me, here in Heaven, I don’t do anything else but sing and smile, that’s enough for me to be happy. And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don’t know the language that men talk?” God responded “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.” “And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?” “Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.” “I’ve heard that on earth there are bad men, who will protect me?” “Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its own life.” “But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.” “Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you.” At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard, and the child in a hurry asked softly: “Oh Father, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel’s name.” Said God, “Your angel’s name is of no importance. You will simply call her MOM!

CHRSITOS VOSKRESE!

VOISTINU VOSKRESE!

The frailty OF beholders AND their gradual recognition.

Our Lord and redeemer revealed the glory of his resurrection to his disciples gradually and over a period of time, undoubtedly because so great was the virtue of the miracle that the weak hearts of mortals could not grasp [the significance of] this all at once. Thus, he had regard for the frailty of those seeking him. To those who came first to the tomb, both the women who were aflame with love for him and the men, he showed the stone rolled back.Since his body had been carried away, he showed them the linen cloths in which it had been wrapped lying there alone. Then, to the women who were searching eagerly, who were confused in their minds about what they had found out about him, he showed a vision of angels who disclosed evidences of the fact that he had risen again. Thus, with the report of his resurrection already accomplished, going ahead of him, the Lord of hosts and the king of glory himself at length appeared and made clear with what great might he had overcome the death he had temporarily tasted. Bede:  Homiles on the gospels 2.9.

Forgiving sins

Priests have received a power which God has given neither to angels nor to archangels. It was said to them: “Whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose, shall be loosed.” Temporal rulers have indeed the power of binding: but they can only bind the body. Priests, in contrast, can bind with a bond which pertains to the soul itself and transcends the very heavens. Did [God] not give them all the powers of heaven? “Whose sins you shall forgive,” he says, “they are forgiven them; whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” The Father has given all judgment to the Son. And now I see the Son placing all this power in the hands of men [Matt. 10:40; John 20:21-23]. They are raised to this dignity as if they were already gathered up to heaven (John Chrysostom The Priesthood 3:5 [A.D. 387]).

on rightly loving the world.

caesarius of arles:

While there is much in the world to love, it is best loved in relation to the One who made it. The world is beautiful, but much fairer is the One who fashioned it. The world is glorious, but more delightful is the One by whom the world was established. Therefore, let us labor as much as we can, beloved, that love of the world as such may not overwhelm us, and that we may nor love the creature more than the creator. God has given us earthly possessions in order that we may love him with our whole heart and soul. But sometimes we provoke God’s displeasure against us when we love his gifts more than God himself. The same thing happens in human relationships. Suppose someone gives a special gift to his protege. But the protege then begins to despise the giver, and loves the gift more than the one who gave. Suppose he comes to think of the giver no longer as friend but enemy. Just so it is with our relationship with God. We love more those who love us for ourselves rather than our gifts. So God is known to love those who love him more than the earthly gifts he gives. sermons 159.6.

Gregory Palamas

The scion of a noble Anatolian family, St. Gregory was born, probably at Constantinople, c. 1296. After his father’s death, he became a monk, as did several members of his family. He entered a monastery on Mt. Athos and followed the rule of St. Basil. He lived on Athos in solitude for most of the following twenty years. In the 1330’s, he began to defend the practice of hesychasm against the attacks of people like Barlaam of Calabria, who denied, among other things, that the light of Tabor which hesychasts experience is the uncreated light. Athough the 1341 council of Constantinople upheld Gregory’s teachings about theosis, he was excommunicated in 1344. Three years later, he was consecrated bishop of Thessaloniki. Because hesychasm had come to have political as well as theological associations, the choice was not popular, and he entered his see with the aid of the Byzantine emperor. The Turks captured Gregory in 1354 and kept him captive for a year. He died in 1359.

Gregory believes that although God is ultimately unknowable, man can experience his energies through the sacraments and mystical experience, which are possible because of the Incarnation of Christ. The practice of the Jesus prayer opens one to God’s energies.

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT is dedicated to the triumph of the Church’s teaching over the “Iconoclasts” or “Destroyers of Icons.” The Second Council of Nicea, held in 787, clearly established the proper teaching concerning the veneration of images.

The Vesper service of this Sunday explains this teaching: “In assuming our body, You (O Christ) accepted all its properties. Therefore, we represent Your likeness and embrace it with the model in mind. We go up to Your love and, following the divine tradition set by the apostles, we draw from it the grace of healing.”

“Truly the Church of Christ received honorable adornment in the noble and holy icons of Christ the Savior, of the Mother of God, and of all the Saints. We lift them up with joy and gladness as the Church rejoices in grace, happily glorifying her God, the Lover of Mankind, who patiently suffered for her sake.” “As the tabernacle of the Covenant held the presence of God, so do the icons show forth the presence of the One we worship and revere. By venerating them, we never go astray. It is glory for us to kneel in true worship of the Incarnate Christ. O believers, let us then embrace His icon and cry out: “O God, save your people and bless your inheritance.’
