Invitation to the feast. Gregory The Great: First we must ask whether this lesson in Matthew is what Luke describes as a dinner, since some details appear inconsistent. Here it is a midday meal, there a dinner; here the one who came to the marriage feast improperly dressed was cast out, and there none of those said to have entered is shown to have been cast out. From Matthew we can infer that in this passage the marriage feast represents the church of the present time, and the dinner in Luke represents the final and eternal banquet. Some who enter the one will leave it, but no one who has once entered the other will later go out. But if anyone argues that it is the same lesson, I think it better to save the faith and yield to another’s interpretation than to give in to strife. Perhaps we can reasonably take it that Luke kept silent about the man Matthew said came without a marriage garment and was thrown out. That one called it a dinner and the other a midday meal does not stand in the way of my interpretation, because when the ancients took their daily midday meal at the ninth hour it was also called a dinner….

A clearer and safer thing to say is that the Father made a marriage feast for his Son by joining the church to him through the mystery of his incarnation, The womb of the Virgin who bore him was the bridal chamber of this bridegroom, and so the psalmist says, “He has set his tent in the sun, and he is like a bridegroom coming forth from his bridal chamber.” He truly came forth like a bridegroom from his bridal chamber who, as God incarnate, left the inviolate womb of the Virgin to unite the church to himself.

And so he sent his servants to invite his friends to the marriage feast. He sent once, and he sent again, because first he made the prophets and later the apostles preachers of the Lord’s incarnation. He sent his servants twice with the invitation, because he said through the prophets that his only Son’s incarnation would come about, and he proclaimed through the apostles that it had.

Because those who were first invited to the marriage banquet refused to come, he said in his second invitation, “See, I have prepared my meal; my oxen and fattened animals have been slain, and everything is ready.” What do we take the oxen and fattened animals to be but the fathers of the Old and New Testaments? The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

Matthew 21:33 A certain householder planted a vineyard – God planted the Church in Canaan; and hedged it round about – First with the law, then with his peculiar providence: and dug a wine press – Perhaps it may mean Jerusalem: and built a tower – The temple: and went into a far country – That is, left the keepers of his vineyard, in some measure, to behave as they should see good. 12:1; Luke 20:9. 21:34 He sent his servants – His extraordinary messengers, the prophets: to the husbandmen – The ordinary preachers or ministers of the Jews. 21:41 They say – Perhaps some of the by – standers, not the chief priests or Pharisees; who, as St. Luke relates, said, God forbid, 20:16. 21:42 The builders – The scribes and priests, whose office it was to build up the Church. Is become the head of the corner – Or the chief corner stone: he is become the foundation of the Church, on which the whole building rests, and is the principal corner stone, for uniting the Gentiles to it, as the chief corner stone of a house supports and links its two sides together. 118:22.

Dormition of Our Lady The Theotokos

The “Falling-Asleep” or “Repose” of our Most Holy Lady Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary: After the Ascension of the Lord, the Mother of God remained in the care of the Apostle John the Theologian, and during his journeyings She lived at the home of his parents, near Mount Eleon (the Mount of Olives, or Mount Olivet). She was a source of consolation and edification for both the Apostles and for all the believers. Conversing with them, She told them about miraculous happenings: the Annuniciation (Blagoveschenie), the Conception (Zachatie) without seed and without defilement of Christ born of Her, about His early childhood, and about all His earthly life. And just like the Apostles, She helped plant and strengthen the Christian Church by Her presence, Her discourse and Her prayers. The reverence of the Apostles for the Most Holy Virgin was extraordinary. After the receiving of the Holy Spirit on the remarkable day of Pentecost, the Apostles remained basically at Jerusalem for about 10 years attending to the salvation of the Jews, and wanting moreover to see the Mother of God and hear Her holy discourse. Many of the newly-enlightened in the faith even came from faraway lands to Jerusalem, to see and to hear the All-Pure Mother of God.

he ordered him sold WITH his wife AND children.

chrysostom: “His lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children.” Why? Not out of cruelty or inhumanity, for the punishment concerned the steward—his wife was already trapped like a slave to his folly. Rather, this discipline occurred in order to effect his transformation. His purpose is to frighten him by this threat so that he may come to supplication, and not merely that they all be sold. For if the lord had done this with unmitigated punishment in mind, he would not have granted his request, nor would he have bestowed upon him a special favor. He did not dismiss the debt, and he called for an accounting. Why? His teaching purpose was to show him with all justice precisely how much debt he was going to free him from! In this way at least he might in due time become more gentle toward his fellow servant. Yet, even having learned of the weight of his debt and the greatness of the forgiveness, he continued to take his fellow servant by the throat. If the master had not disciplined him beforehand with such attempted medicines, how much worse might his cruelty have been than the shocking extent that it actually turned out to be? the gospel of matthew, homily 61.3.

help my unbelief. chrysostom;

The Scripture shows that this man is very weak in faith. This is evident from many things: from Christ’s saying, “All things are possible to him who believes,” and from the fact that the man himself as he approached said, “Help my unbelief.”And it is evident from Christ’s ordering the demon “never to enter him again” and from the man’s saying again to Christ, “If you can.” But you will say, “If his unbelief was the reason why the demon had not gone out of the boy, why does he blame the disciples?” To show that they can often cure the sick, even though no one brings them in with faith. For just as the faith of the one bringing in the sick was often sufficient for receiving a cure even from lesser ministers, so the virtue of the minister was also sufficient to achieve a miracle even without the faith of those bringing them in. Both of these are demonstrated in the Scriptures; for those around Cornelius drew to them the power of the Spirit by their faith. And in the time of Elisha, when no one believed, a dead man was raised. the gospel of Matthew, homily 57.3.

Covid Obligations – Restrictions Lifted

We have all known and felt the impact of COVID-19 in so many ways as individuals and families, among friends and at work.  It has been a time of hardship and struggle, of separation and isolation.  It has also had an impact on our lives of faith.  Now, as life returns to normalcy in so many ways, it is also time for us to return to Sunday Divine Liturgy.  In our Archeparchy, we will reinstate the obligation to attend the Divine Liturgy in person on Sundays and Holy Days beginning on Sunday, August 15, 2021, the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the Mother of God.  As your Archbishop, I had dispensed you from this obligation in the Spring of 2020 as the developing coronavirus pandemic required people not to assemble in group settings.  Now, with the impact of the pandemic considerably reduced, it is again possible for the faithful to assemble for the Liturgy.

This obligation, as is always the case, does not apply to those who are seriously ill, have a serious health risk, as well as, those who have significant fear or anxiety of being in a part of large group at this time.  Likewise, the obligation does not apply to those who care for those who cannot attend the Divine Liturgy in person. Those excused from participation in the Divine Liturgy are encouraged to spend time in prayer, meditating on the Death and Resurrection of the Lord, reading the Sacred Scriptures, and uniting themselves to Christ in his worship of the Father of us all.  Those who are legitimately excused are also encouraged to listen to the radio broadcast of the Divine Liturgy, or to participate through one of the computer or face book live stream offerings from one of our churches. The spacing restrictions and special communion practices are also discontinued as of August 15, 2021.

You give them. chrysostom:

Note carefully the Teacher’s skill. Observe with what discretion he draws them toward believing. Observe how deliberately this unfolds. For he did not simply say, “I will feed them.” The deeper significance of that would have not been easily understood. So what does he say? “They need not go away; you give them something to eat,”

He did not say “I give them” but “you give them.” For at this point their regard for him was essentially as to a man. They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” At this point Mark adds, “They did not understand the saying, for their heart was hardened.” For they were continuing to crawl like babies. the gospel of matthew, homily 49.

Send them away: Cyril of Alexandria:

Let us examine carefully what this sending away of the crowds is all about. Some of those who followed Christ were afflicted by evil spirits and begged to be delivered from them. Others were afflicted with various sicknesses from which they sought relief. Therefore, because the disciples knew that Jesus had only to consider what those who were suffering longed for and it would be accomplished, “they sent them away.” They did this not so much because they thought Jesus’ time was too valuable but because they had a love for the crowds and, as though already having an understanding of pastoral care, they began to care for the people. fragment 175.

TWO BLIND MAN

The start of this encounter is in public. There are crowds round Jesus, and the blind men are caught up in the general emotion. They shout at Jesus using a formal title, ‘Son of David,’ as though he was a powerful messianic figure dispensing health to crowds. Jesus waits until he is in the house, where he can meet the blind men in person, and question their faith.

Lord, you do not meet me as one of a multitude, but face to face, on my own, where you can test the truth of my words, free from the illusions of mass emotion.

In matters of faith, we are all blind in some way. But, if I allow Jesus to touch my heart, he will help me see more clearly the path I should follow.

The blind men had faith in Jesus’ power of healing. Do I ever experience the inner healing power of God?

The blind men remind me of the need to be persistent in my prayer. Is what I ask God for now in my mind during the day? Do I look with expectation and hope to see how God is answering me? If I don’t, what might my lack of perseverance say?

I give thanks to God for those times when my eyes have been opened and ask God to lead me to appreciate truth.

Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom

Fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence. Their conviction
resulted in untold sufferings for themselves and their families. Of the 56 men, five were captured by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the
Revolutionary Army. Another had two sons captured. Nine of the fifty-six
fought and died from wounds or hardships of the war. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships sunk by the British navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in poverty. At the battle of Yorktown, the British General Cornwallis had taken over Thomas Nelson’s home for his headquarters. Nelson quietly ordered General George Washington to open fire on the Nelson home. The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt. John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His fields and mill were destroyed. For over a year, he lived in forest and caves, returning home only to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later, he died from exhaustion.

Conquer Satan

Make an effort , then, to meet more frequently to celebrate God’s Eucharist
and to offer praise. For, when you meet frequently in the same place, the
forces of Satan are overthrown, and his baneful influence is neutralized by
the unanimity of your faith. Peace is a precious thing: it puts an end to
every war waged by heavenly or earthly enemies.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Ephesians.
