NEW BISHOP FOR EPARCHY OF PARMA

It is with the greatest joy that I inform you that our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed the Very Rev. Robert Mark Pipta as the sixth Bishop of  Parma. Father Pipta is a priest of the Eparchy of Phoenix and has been serving honorably as the Rector of our seminary in Pittsburgh, Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary.

Gregory THE Great: But since you have already come into the house of the marriage feast, our holy church, as a result of God’s generosity, be careful, my friends, lest when the King enters he find fault with some aspect of your heart’s clothing. We must consider what comes next with great fear in our hearts. But the king came in to look at the guests and saw there a person not clothed in a wedding garment. What do we think is meant by the wedding garment, dearly beloved? For if we say it is bap­tism or faith, is there anyone who has entered this marriage feast without them? A person is outside because he has not yet come to believe, What then must we understand by the wedding garment but love? That person enters the mar­riage feast, but without wearing a wedding gar­ment, who is present in the holy church. He may have faith, but he does not have love. We are correct when we say that love is the wedding garment because this is what our Creator him­self possessed when he came to the marriage feast to join the church to himself. Only God’s love brought it about that his only begotten Son united the hearts of his chosen to himself. John says that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son for us.” Forty Gospel homilies 38.9.

21:34-36 The Tenants Kill the Landowner’s Servants

he sent His servants to get His fruit.

Chrysostom: He sent his servants, that is, the prophets, “to receive the fruit.” By fruit he referred to their obedience, demonstrated through their works. But even here they exhib­ited their wickedness. They not only failed to give the fruit, after having enjoyed so much care, thus displaying their laziness, but also were angry with the servants who came. For those who did not repay what they owed should hardly have been indignant or angry. Rather, they should have asked for the householder’s forgiveness. But they not only were indignant; they even bloodied their hands. While deserving punishment, they themselves inflicted punish­ment. Therefore he sent a second and a third company of servants both to show their wicked­ness and the love toward humanity of the One who sent them. Why didn’t he immediately send his Son? In order that they might repent and condemn themselves for the things they had done to the others. He hoped they would set aside their anger and reverence him when he came. the gospel of Matthew, Homily 68.1.

Byzantine ASSEMBLY—St Mary Church, Hillsborough, NJ, November 3-5, 2023

What must I Do to inherit eternal life?

Chrysostom: And, behold, one came and said to him, “Good Master, what deed must I do to inherit eternal life?” Some criticize this young man as dissembling and wicked, approaching Jesus to put him to the test. I would not hesitate to say that he is avaricious and greedy since Christ also showed him up as such. Yet I would by no means call him a dis­sembler, because it is not safe to venture on things uncertain and especially in a case of blame. Such is also true because Mark has taken away the suspicion of dissembling. For Mark says, “A man ran up and kneeling before him asked him” and “Jesus looking upon him loved him.” The tyranny of money is a power­ful thing, as is clear here. Though we are prac­ticed in the other virtues, avarice brings the others to ruin. The Gospel of Matthew, homily 63.1.

Ten thousand talents owed, A hundred denarii collected.

Cyril OF Alexandria: The God of all releases us from the difficulties of our faults, according to the parable. This is what is signified by the ten thousand talents, But this happens on the proviso that we our­selves release our fellow servants from the hun­dred denarii, that is, from the few minor faults they have committed against us. The angels who stand over us and are under the same yoke of service as we are make accusations before God. They do not speak to God as if God does not know—for God knows everything. Rather, in the interest of justice, they demand the proper punishment for those who choose to despise and dishonor the command that we love one another. When we meet our proper deserts, either we receive punishment in our present life, such as being visited with some pain or trouble or infirmity, or if not, we will certainly be punished in the future life. God punishes the obsti­nate, intractable person with a view to improving and changing him for the better. This is easy to see. Holy Scripture is pertinent here, in these wisely spoken words: “the Lord disci­plines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son,” and again: “Abide instruc­tion.” Fragment 216.

THE TRANSFIGURATION

By St. John Chrysostom

Christ brings before them the one who had died (Moses) and one that had not yet died (Elijah). Both had lost their life, and found it. For both the one and the other had courageously withstood a tyrant: one the Egyptian, the other Ahab; and this on behalf of a people who were both ungrateful and disobedient.

Both were simple, unlearned men. One was slow of speech and weak of voice, the other a rough countryman. And both were men who had despised the riches of this world. For Moses possessed nothing. And Elijah had nothing but his sheepskin. And this too when they were yet under the old law, and had the privilege of seeing signs and wonders. And though Moses had divided the sea in two, Peter had walked upon the waters, and could move mountains. And if Elijah had raised a dead man to life, these raised thousands, though they had not yet received the Holy Spirit.

Christ brought these men before the disciples, for he wished them to imitate their courage of soul, and their steadfastness in leading their people; and so that they might be gentle as Moses, and possessed of the zeal of Elijah, and as devoted as both were. He brought all this before their mind through this vision. He brought these before them in glory; and not alone that they might be as they were, but that they might surpass them. That Christ might uplift their courage against all such dangers, he here brings before them those two men who were such shining lights of the Old Testament.

SISTERS OF ST. BASIL PILGRIMAGE:

Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great 89^th Annual Pilgrimage will be held on September 2&3, 2023 at Mount Macrina in Uniontown, Pa. Theotokos: Seeker of the Lost is this year’s pilgrimage. For more information, please visit their website-https://sistersofstbasil.org

OUR LADY OF LEBONAN SHRINE:

The 58^th Annual Assumption Pilgrimage “A Pilgrimage to Rediscover Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist” will be held at the Basilica & National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon August 13-15, 2023. For more information call the Shrine at (330)538-3351.

SUPER BINGO:

St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 356 Belle Vista, 2nd Super Bingo ($6,000 in pay-outs) will be held on Saturday, September 9^th. Doors open at 2:00pm, dinner served 2:00-4:30 and 1^st game begins at 5:30. Tickets are $45.00 and includes 24 cards and 1 special pack, pasta and meatball dinners plus other prizes. Tickets are at church hall from 9:00am-6:00pm.

Jesus walks on water

 Chrysostom: The disciples are tossed on the waves again. They are in a storm, fully as bad as the previous one. Gently and by degrees he ex­cites and urges the disciples on toward greater responsiveness, even to the point of bearing all things nobly. Whereas in the previous storm they had him with them in the ship, now they were alone by themselves. Even when he was asleep in the boat in the previous situation, he was ready to give them relief from danger. But then he was present to them.

Now he is leading them into a greater degree of challenge. Now he is not even present to them. He has departed. In mid-sea he permits a storm to arise. This was all for their training, that they might not look for some easy hope of preservation from any earthly source. He then allows them to be tossed by the storm all night! This had the purpose of awakening their stony hearts in a most complete way. This is how Jesus dealt with the nature of their fear, which the rough weather and the timing had produced. He cast them directly into a situation in which they would have a greater longing for him and a con­tinual remembrance of him. The Gospel of Matthew, homily  50.I.

Feeding 500 thousand in the Gospel of Mathew

14:14-21 The miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, reported by all four evangelists, shows Jesus feeding His people as God fed the Israelites in the desert. The Church Fathers see in this an image of the Eucharist, an idea also expressed in John 6, the discourse on the Bread of Life. In 15:32-39 and Mark 8:1-10 another miracle is mentioned, in which Jesus feeds four thousand people with seven loaves and a few small fish. This miracle is probably not a duplicate report of the first miracle, but another performed in a different place. Moved with compassion is used in very similar situations (see 20:34; Mark 1:41; 6:34; Luke 7:13) to show the Messiah’s power and authority extending to those who suffer.

14:19 Jesus is teaching us not to eat until we first give thanks to God. The terminology reminds us of the Last Supper (see Luke 22:15-20) and leads to the Eucharistic interpretation of this miracle. The participation of the disciples in distributing the loaves and the fish is important. In the Church Jesus feeds His flock at the Eucharist through His servants, the priests.

THEY MARVELED AND GLORIFIED GOD.

CHRYSOSTOM: Do you see how he is shown to be Creator of both souls and bodies? He heals the paralysis in both soul and body. The healing of the soul is made evident through the healing of the body, even while the body still remains a creature crawling on the ground. The crowds were slow to recognize who he was; “When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to humans.” … He proceeded by his daily actions to arouse them and lift up their thinking. It would have been no small thing for him to be thought greater than all others, as having come from God. If they had established this adequately in their own minds, they would have known in due order that he was indeed the Son of God.

But they did not grasp these things clearly. Because of this they did not come close to recognizing who he was. For again they were saying, “This man is not from God! How can this man be from God?” Their minds churned over these statements continuously. THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW, HOMILY 29.2.

PARISHIONER NEWS:

Our dear parishioner, Richard Kuty Sr. passed away on June 23^rd. Services were held this past week. Our deepest sympathy and prayers to his wife Barbara, children, grandchildren, family friends. Blessed repose to his servant Richard.

Question for Jesus

Each of us should think about what is my question for Christ?

If I say something like, “Will He help me?” – that is not a question directed to Christ but a question for our self to answer.  I need to change the question and ask it directly to Christ.  I need to talk to Him.  I need to orient my life so that I can so directly talk to Him.

If I ask, “Can you help me, Jesus?”   – the answer is yes, of course He could, but whether the help I want is in accordance with God’s will is another issue.  To ask that question seems to reflect some doubt in my heart about his ability/power or about His goodness and love.

To ask the right question, I need to think about who Jesus is, what His will and intention is, what is He capable of?   And who am I in relationship to Him?   Depending on who I am in relationship to Him determines what I can ask of Him.

If I am His servant, and He really is my Lord, I can ask, “How can I serve You?”  “What is your will for me?”

My ability to hear His response will depend on my relationship to Him.  I need to know who He is before I can relate to Him, or ask the right question of Him.
