THE PRECEDENT OF LOVE WITH ABRAHAM AND ISAAC. EPHREM THE SYRIAN: Abraham had many servants. Why did [God] not command him to offer up one of these? It was because [Abraham’s] love would not have been revealed by a servant. His son, therefore, was necessary so that Abraham’s love might be revealed. There were likewise [other] servants of God, but he did not show his love toward his creatures through any of these but rather through his Son, through whom his love for us might be proclaimed….
From Abraham [onwards] the symbols of the wood and the lamb began to be delineated. For Isaac was a symbol of the lamb [caught] in the tree, while Jacob showed [that] the wood can vivify water. Wood therefore was worthy that he be suspended from it, since no bone in him was broken. The fruits of the earth are stimulated by wood, and the treasures of the sea are grasped by means of wood. So too, in the case of the body and the soul. It was this [the wood of the cross] that was hewn by the wrath of the rabid crowd. It was like a mute person in its silence, and in its agility a source of growth to the heights for humanity. COMMENTARY ON TATIAN’S DIATESSARON 21.7,9.
