PARISHIONER NEWS:

Congratulations to Bri Slemons who graduated this week from Kent State

University with her Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology with an Athletic Training Concentration.

She has accepted a position at Charleston Southern University as an athletic trainer for their football team. She will be relocating to Charleston, South Carolina. May God continue o bless her with health, happiness and continued success.

MEMORIAL DAY :

On Sunday, May 30^th, the 9:00 am liturgy @ Infant Jesus and the 11:00 am liturgy @ St. Nicholas will be for veterans, armed services members, civil servants, first responders, and front- line workers. Following there will be a blessing and raising of the flag. Parishioners and guest are invited to bring their NEW flags for blessing. This event is sponsored by GCU 442.

HELPING HANDS:

The next Spring clean- up and landscaping project will be held

on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 10:00am-12:00 (noon) helping hands will be at St. Nicholas Byzantine Cemetery on Hyatt Street in Campbell.

Our high priest prays as God and man.

Cyril of Alexandria:

Christ, who manifested himself in the last times above the types and figures of the Law, at once our high priest and mediator, prays for us as man. And at the same time he is ever ready to cooperate with God the Father, who distributes good gifts to those who are worthy. Paul showed us this most plainly in the words “grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Christ, then, prays for us as man and also unites in distributing good gifts to us as God. For he, being a holy high priest, blameless and undefiled, offered himself— not for his own weakness, as was the custom of those to whom was allotted the duty of sacrificing according to the Law, but rather for the salvation of our souls. A Mother’s Daily Prayer

Dear Lord, it’s such a hectic day,

With little time to stop and pray,

The Samaritan Woman

Before You preach, leave your water jar. Augustine: Having heard, “I that speak with you am he,” and having received Christ the Lord into her heart, what could she do now but leave her water jar and run to preach the gospel? She cast out lust and hurried to proclaim the truth. Let those who would preach the gospel learn: let them throw away their water jar at the well. You remember what I said before of the water jar. It was a vessel with which the water was drawn, called hydra, from its Greek name, because water is hydor in Greek; just as if it were called aquarium, from the Latin. She threw away her water jar then, which was no longer of use but a burden to her, such was her eagerness to be satisfied with that water. Throwing her burden away to make Christ known, “she ran to the city and says to those men, ‘Come, and see a man who told me everything I ever did.”‘ Tractates on the Gospel of John 15.30.

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen: “There is something good in everything. Evil has no capital of its own; it lives in goodness as a parasite. But loving the partial goodness in others we bring them more quickly to the circle of Goodness which is God. This was the tactic of Our Lord when He spoke to an adulteress at the well. There was nothing in common between His Divine Goodness and her sinful life, except a love of a drink of cold water. So He started there…and led her on to a declaration that He was Love and Savior of the world.“

Inner meaning

John 5:1-9 (continued) certain scholars think this passage is an allegory. The man stands for the people of Israel. The five porches stand for the five books of the law. In the porches the people lay ill. The law could show a man his sin, but could never mend it; the law could uncover a man’s weakness, but could never cure it. The law, like the porches, sheltered the sick soul but could never heal it. The thirty-eight years stand for the thirty- eight years in which the Jews wandered in the desert before they entered the promised land; or for the number of the centuries men had been waiting for the Messiah. The stirring of the waters stands for baptism. In point of fact in early Christian art a man is often depicted as rising from the baptismal waters carrying a bed upon his back. It may well be that it is now possible to read all these meanings into this story; but it is highly unlikely that John wrote it as an allegory. It has the vivid stamp of factual truth. But we do well to remember that any Bible story has in it far more than fact. There are always deeper truths below the surface and even the simple stories are meant to leave us face to face with eternal things.

JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA:

Little did Joseph know that his own tomb would become the Holy Sepulchre. Joseph not only buried Jesus in his tomb, he later became a missionary to England. He was a member of the Sanhedrin, which was the highest court of the Jewish nation, as well as their supreme religious council. This group voted to put Jesus to death. Joseph, however, abstained from voting. He was chained and imprisoned for burying Jesus. However, Jesus appeared to him after His burial, and so Joseph believed. He was released from prison and exiled from Jeruselem. He traveled with the Apostle Philip and many other apostles to England, winning converts along the way. They were all thrown into prison by the chief, who would only release them if they remained in one area, a reservation, of his choosing. It was swampland, which the Christians all drained and made habitable. The area is now known as Glastonbury. They built a chapel to the Archangel Gabriel, and Joseph is buried in Avlon.

A MEANS TO AN END

As precious as it is, faith is but the means to an end. For the soul, faith is the seed — spiritual life is the fruit. Life is the natural result of faith. Every person’s life is affected by what each believes. A person’s belief forms the principles of conduct in life. Faith in Christ is the means to a spiritual life with Him. “These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that, believing this, you may have life through His name” (John 20:31). Jesus came that we might have life, and that we have it more abundantly.

We can, therefore, conclude that faith is more than doctrine and rules. It is a profound commitment which confers on us the ability to live a new life in Christ. Faith is –God’s gift to us. It cannot be merited. It is given to us because God loves us. We are asked to respond to God’s loving initiative. The Son of God, who in His compassion became man, died so far as His body was concerned when His soul was separated from His body; but this body was not separated from His divinity, and so He raised up His body once more and took it with Him to heaven in glory. Similarly, when those who have lived here in a godly manner are separated from their bodies, they are not separated from God, and in the resurrection they will take their bodies with them to God, and in their bodies they will enter with inexpressible joy there where Jesus has preceded us (cf. Heb. 6:20) and in their bodies they will enjoy the glory that will be revealed in Christ (cf. 1 Pet. 5:1).

St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Campbell, is having a Take-Out Only Spaghetti Dinner on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021 at St. Michael’s Hall, 405 Robinson Road, Campbell.  Tickets are $11.00 per dinner and children under 10 are $5.00.   The time of pickup is 12:00 noon – 3:00 p.m.  Please call 330-770-9213 with your orders.

Entry of our Lord into Jerusalem, or Palm Sunday

On this day the Holy Church especially commemorates the imperial glorification of Jesus Christ before His death on the cross to indicate that the sufferings of the Savior were voluntary. The event of the feast is described in the Gospels (Mt. 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-41; John 12:12-19). The beginning of this feast goes back to deep antiquity. We meet the most ancient instruction on it in the teaching for this day of Methodius of Patara (3rd c.). Beginning from the VII century, many hymnographers (Andrew of Crete, Cosmas of Maium, John of Damascus, Theodore and Joseph of the Studite Monastery, the Emperor Leo the Philosopher, Theophanes and Nicephorus Xanthopoulos) have glorified the feast with hymns, which we sing even now. It is traditional to use palms on this feast (palm branches). It is even called “Palm” Sunday, “Flower bearing”, “Flower offering” or “Flowery”, and in popular usage “Palm Sunday”. For us willows replace palms because the willow tree blossoms before other trees. The tradition to use palms on this feast is based on the circumstances of the event of the Entry of our Lord into Jerusalem (refer to page 274). Praying as though we will invisibly meet the Lord and greet Him as the Victor over Hades and death, we hold in our hands the “signs of victory”
