Please note, all parishioners are invited to participate, you do not need to belong to the social club.

CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE:

The annual Celebration of Marriage will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at St. Elias Church. All parishioners who are celebrating their wedding anniversaries of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 or additional years that are multiple of 5 during this year of 2024 will be honoured. If you are unable to attend, certificates will be sent. Please notify Paula Slemons or Fr. Michael by July14th to relay your information to the Chancery.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL:

St. Michael Church in Campbell will host Vacation Bible School and are inviting all BYZANTINE KIDS pn an amazing undersea adventure where they’ll experience the ever flowing, never ending love of God! At SCUBA VBS, kiddos will dive into a friendship with God, be immersed in His word & discover what living water is really all about! VBS will take place at St. Michael Hall, 405 Robinson Road, Campbell, beginning Monday, July 22^nd through Friday, July 26^th from 9:00 am- 12:30pm. Registration forms can be found at www.stmichaelbyzcampbell.org or facebook.com/st.michaelbyz.campbell and are due by Friday, June 28^th. There is no charge to participate.

The Devil has not Full Power

Among the angelic powers the chief of the terrestrial order, the one to whom God had entrusted the task of looking after the earth, was not evil by nature, he had not received any trace of evi1 from his creator. He was good. However, he did not maintain the light and the honor that God had given him. By a deliberate act of his own free will he rebelled against the Creator. He turned his face away from goodness and fell into evil. Evil is in fact is merely the absence of good, as darkness is the absence of light. A host of angels placed under his command followed him in the fall. Despite their angelic nature, they also freely plunged from goodness down to evil and became wicked. The devils cannot do anything against us without God s permission. But with God’s permission they are powerful. All wickedness, all the passions are inspired by them But listen: God allows them to suggest sin to a person, but they cannot force him to do it. The Word that Hurts but Heals

The word of Wisdom exhorts us thus: ‘Have you sons? Discipline them and break them in from their earliest years. Have you daughters? See that they are chaste, and do not be too lenient with them.’ [Ecclus. 7:23-24] It is true that we love our own children very much, more than anything else. But those who speak only gentle words to them are in fact loving the children they are afraid of hurting only a little. On the other hand, those who correct them strictly are hurting them today but doing them good for the future. Our Lord did not seek what is comfortable today for us. Rather he sought for us a good future. So let us follow his educational method inspired by love. This admonition is a loving reproof that enlightens the mind. Christ our teacher had recourse to it when, for example, he said: ‘O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!’ [Matt. 23:37] Reproof may be made with contempt. Reproof may be made with vehemence, as a violent censure. But reproof may be made to lay bare sins. This is the kind of correction the Lord is constrained to use because in so many people faith has evaporated. Reproof and correction hurt the soul that they heal of its faults. But they keep the death of the soul at bay.

CONDOLENCES:

Our life-long and beloved parishioner +Paul (Bob) Jonda passed away on June 1^st. His services were on Thursday June 6^th.  Bob’s grandfather, George Jonda, was a founding father of St. Peter & Paul. Our deepest sympathy to Bob’s wife, Mildred and all his family and friends. Blessed repose and eternal memory to +Paul (Bob).

Simply Slavic Heritage Festival will be held in downtown Youngstown on Friday-June 14^th from 5:00pm-11:00 pm and Saturday, June 15^th from 12:00 (noon)-11:00 pm. Admission is $5.00. Children under 12 years old and younger are free. The event will include live music, homemade ethnic food, folk dance performances and more. This year also has the pivski, a European outdoor beer garden. Come and celebrate Youngstown’s Slavic community.

SERVING Two MASTERS:

CHRYSOSTOM: Now Jesus calls mammon here “a master,” not because of its own nature but on account of the wretchedness of those who bow themselves beneath it.1 (According to a line of reasoning daring back to Clement of Alexandria, Chrysostom explains that riches are not evil in their very nature but in the evil use to which they are put, which causes humankind so much unhappiness.) So also he calls the stomach a god, (Phil 3:19.)

How jesus called His first disciples.

Chrysostom: “And they left their nets, and fol­lowed him.” And yet John (the Evangelist) says that they were called in a different way. From this it is evident that this was a second call. One may conclude this from several evidences. For there it is said that they came to him when “John had not yet been thrown into prison” but here it says after he was in confinement. And there Andrew calls Peter, but here Jesus calls both. On the one hand, John says, “Jesus saw Simon com­ing and said, ‘You are Simon, the Son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas, which is translated Peter.’” On the other hand, Matthew says that he was already called by that name, for he says, “Seeing Simon who was called Peter.” … In the other instance, Andrew is seen corning into his house and hearing many things. But here, hav­ing heard one brief call, they both followed immediately. When they earlier had seen that John was in prison and that Jesus was withdraw­ing, it would not have been unnatural for them to return again to their own craft, fishing, hav­ing followed him at the beginning and then later having left him to fish. Accordingly, you now see that Jesus finds them actively fishing. But he neither resisted them at first when they desired to withdraw from him, nor having withdrawn themselves, did he let them go altogether. He gave way when they moved aside from him and came again to win them back. This, after all, is exactly what fishing is all about. the gospel of Matthew, homily 14.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

St. Nikephoros of Chios,

Fortunate is the man who has come to have God as his helper and to have his hopes in Him alone. Let the Devil bear malice towards him, let all men persecute him and plot against him, let all his adversaries fight against him – he never fears anyone, because his has God as his helper. He remains always a victor, always glorified, always happy, always rich, always cheerful and joyful, even if he happens to fall into extreme poverty and into a great many adverse and grievous circumstances of this present life. For inasmuch as he hopes in Almighty God, he does not despair, he is not sorry, is not anxious, but expects help from Above. Fortunate, then, is such a man and worthy to be deemed happy, just as the Prophet-king David regards such a man as happy, saying: “Blessed is he whose helper is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” Such were all the Prophets, the Apostles, the Martyrs, the Holy Ascetics and all the Saints from the beginning of time.

Our ECF children will be having a end of the year party at the church THIS Sunday, May 19^th following 9:00 am Liturgy.  Thank you to our ECG teachers-Christine Bero, Mary Sinowski and Elena Slemons for making this year a great success.

HELPING HANDS:

Due to the weather, Helping Hands was again cancelled. We will be rescheduling for a weekend in June. Please see the bulletin for the new date.

SIMPLY SLAVIC:

Simply Slavic Heritage Festival will be held in downtown Youngstown on Friday-June 14^th from 5:00pm-11:00 pm and Saturday, June 15^th from 12:00 (noon)-11:00 pm. Admission is $5.00. Children under 12 years old and younger are free. The event will include live music, homemade ethnic food, folk dance performances and more. This year also has the pivski, a European outdoor beer garden. Come and celebrate Youngstown’s Slavic community.

BYZANTINE SOCIAL CLUB:

The Byzantine Social club will have their first cookout of the year on Wednesday, May 29^th at 6:00pm in the church pavilion. Meat (hamburgers and hot dogs) will be provided. Please sign up on the sheet in the vestibule as to what you are bringing to share for dinner. New members are always welcome!

CONDOLENCES:

Our parishioner, Edna Bellatto, passed away and her services were held last week. Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Edna’s family and friends. Blessed repose to his servant Edna.

Thank you to all who came this past Wednesday and participated in “Our Helping Hands”. The pavilion is ready for our summer events.  We truly appreciate your time and hard-work.

NEW APPOINTMENTS

Archbishop William has made the following Appointments effective Saturday, May 18, 2024:

 Very Reverend Richard I. Lambert as his own requestrelieved from active ministry, As Pastor of St. Mary Church, Youngstown, Ohio, as Protopresbyter of the Youngstown Protopresbyterate and as member of the Pension Board in order to enter retirement.

 Father John J. Welch appointed Administrator of St. Mary Church, Youngstown, Ohio.

 Father Kevin E. Marks appointed Protopresbyter of the Youngstown Protopresbyterate.

Wish Fr. Lambert happy retirement and to his new chapter in his life and Marks and Welsh good start to their new appointments. God grant them peace, health and happiness.

All parishioners are invited to our “Helping Hands” Days. This year we are having two days to work on the parish grounds weather permitting. On Wednesday, May 8^th @ 9:00 am, we will be working on the pavilion. On Saturday, May 11^th @ 9:00 am we will be working on the church landscaping.  Lunch will be provided.

9:2 Who Sinned?

Why the disciples ask.

Chrysostom: They were led to ask this question because our Lord had said above, when he healed the paralytic, “See, you are well! Sin no more.” Thinking from this that the man had been paralyzed because of his sins, they say, “That other person was paralyzed because of his sins, but what would you say about this man? Had he sinned? How can you say that, since he was blind from birth? Have his parents sinned? Neither can one say this because the child does not suffer punishment because of his parents.” The same way we ask how it can be when we see a child suffering, this is how the disciples spoke here, not so much asking for information as being perplexed. Homilies on the Gospel of John 56.1.

The parish breakfast/brunch is this Sunday at noon (12:00 pm) at Café 422 on South Avenue. It is no longer a buffet as each person can now order off the menu.

5:3 A Multitude of Disabled

RARE HEALINGS MAGNIFY THE MIRACLE.

THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA: A great crowd of ill people, struck with different infirmities, had gathered here hoping to be healed as if these waters might affect something because the entrails of sheep offered as victims to God [for the temple] were washed in them. And God also supported this belief by causing the waters to move sometimes. Since they believed that the waters were moved by divine power, they obtained the grace of healing after they had come down [into the water]. It was not that many people were healed at the same time but that the one who came down first obtained the aid afforded by grace, [This happened] in order that the facility of the healing might not diminish the effect of the miracle. And so, because they waited with great attention and anticipation for the movement of the waters, once they recovered their health, they might have a better memory of their healing, even though many lay ill there, he did not heal all of them. But, in order to show his power, he chose one affected with a very serious infirmity and who was hopeless already about his recovery. COMMENTARY ON JOHN 2.5.2-5.
