THE CROSS RAISED FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE.

ANDREW OF CRETE: The cross is raised and appears above the earth, which until recently malice had kept hidden. It is raised, not to receive glory (for with Christ nailed to it what greater glory could it have?) but to give glory to God who is worshiped on it and proclaimed by it…. It is not surprising that the church rejoices in the cross of Christ and robes herself in festal clothes, revealing her bridal beauty as she honors this day. Nor is it surprising that this great throng of people has gathered together today to see the cross exposed aloft and to worship Christ whom they see raised upon it. For the cross is exposed in order to be raised and is raised to be exposed.

What cross? The cross, which a little while ago was hidden in a place called The Skull but now is everywhere adored. This is what we rejoice over today; this is what we celebrate; this is the point of the present feast; this is the manifestation of the mystery…. For this hidden and life-giving cross had to be exposed, set on high like a city on a hill or a lamp on a stand, for all the world to see. HOMILY II ON THE EXALTATION OF THE VENERABLE CROSS.

The law and life. Origen: These command­ments are sufficient for someone entering on the ground level of the path of eternal life. But they are not sufficient to lead one to the higher life, and certainly not to perfection. One who fails in just one of these commandments cannot even enter the beginnings of life. Anyone who wishes to enter the early stages of the path of life must be free from adultery and murder and any kind of theft. For just as the adulterer and murderer will not enter into life, so neither will the thief. Many of those who are said to believe in Christ are guilty of this sin. 18:21-35 Unlimited forgiveness toward a brother or sister is illustrated by this parable. Sin is portrayed as a debt to God (6:12), a: debt originated by neglecting God’s will. Ten thousand talents (v. 24) as an impossible sum, more than a laborer could earn in all lifetime – is contrasted to a hundred denarii (v. 28), equivalent to about a hundred days’ wages. Just as the king shows mercy and severity toward the servant, so does God show love and strictness toward us depending on our willingness to forgive our brothers and sisters., The love of God is manifested in paying off the debt, a remission or letting go of sins. Because God forgives us, we in return are obliged to grant this gift of forgiveness to others. When each Christian forgives from his heart (v. 35), true reconciliation and healing come to the Church by God’s grace.

Sisters of the Order of St. Basil 91^st Annual Pilgrimage, 500 West Main Street, in Uniontown will be held over Labor Day weekend. Seeker of the Lost is this year’s Pilgrimage.

CHINESE AUCTION:

St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Campbell is having their annual3-Tier Chinese Auction on Sunday, September 7^th in their church hall. Admission is $10 & includes 25 tier-one tickets and lunch (pasta bowl). Doors open @ Noon and drawings begin @ 2:15 pm. Over 200 great prizes, gift certificates and theme baskets all waiting to be won. A takeout pasta is available for $12.

REVERSE RAFFLE:

St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Campbell is having their annual Reverse raffle on Saturday, October 4^th at their church hall. Grand prize is $2500 along with other prizes, games and chances to win. Ticket numbers 1-200 are being sold at $100 per ticket ($150 with guest) which includes entry into the raffle, appetizers, dinner and open bar. Call 330-755-4831 for your ticket. BLESSING OF THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS:

Our long-time parishioner Peter Alexoff passed away this week and his services were held on Friday, August 8^th. Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Peter’s family and friends. Blessed repose to his servant Peter.

14:29 Peter Walks on the Water

peter got out OF THE boat. Chrysostom: Why then did Christ permit Peter to come? Suppose he had said, “No, you cannot come.” With his boldness Peter might have protested again. But when Peter saw the sea and wind, he became dizzy and was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”

In relating this same situation, John remarks that “then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.” This implies that when they were on the point of arriving at the land, he entered the ship. Peter then having come down from the ship went to Jesus, not rejoicing so much in walking on the water as in coming to him. the gospel of Matthew, homily 50.2.

Thank you to the Byzantine Social Club for organizing and all parishioners who attended and brought the delicious food to our parish picnic. Reveal Mercy, Peace and Love

Some of Jesus’s physical healing, such as the blind men, was significantly dramatic, but He usually kept it quiet. While we freely share that Jesus is a part of our life, keeping the details of the why, how, and when to yourself may be appropriate. We should be like Jesus, going to a private “place” to pray, fast, or suffer in secret. There is flexibility to the mystery of quiet.  For instance, if you are in a prayer group that you trust, they may be able to help distinguish what can be shared and how. Spiritual giants such as John of the Cross and Saint Theresa of Avila had such support systems and were given the advice they needed to do so. There are considerable benefits to resisting the urge to explain extraordinary details of our encounters with Jesus. When we do, we focus firmly on humility, obedience, faith, and dependence. This allows us to focus on our combined humanity and divinity to be present to reveal mercy, peace, and love.

RISE AND WALK.

JEROME: It is easier said than done. Whether the sins of the paralytic were forgiven, only he who forgave them knew for sure. “Arise and walk”: both he who arose and those who saw him arise were able to vouch for this. Hence there is a bodily sign in order to demonstrate a spiritual sign, though its impact is to curb the imperfections of body and soul. And we are given an understanding of sin and many bodily weaknesses to come. Perhaps, too, sins are forgiven first, so that with the causes of infirmity removed health may be restored. COMMENTARY ON MATTHEW I.9.5.
