Gregory Palamas

The scion of a noble Anatolian family, St. Gregory was born, probably at Constantinople, c. 1296. After his father’s death, he became a monk, as did several members of his family. He entered a monastery on Mt. Athos and followed the rule of St. Basil. He lived on Athos in solitude for most of the following twenty years. In the 1330’s, he began to defend the practice of hesychasm against the attacks of people like Barlaam of Calabria, who denied, among other things, that the light of Tabor which hesychasts experience is the uncreated light. Athough the 1341 council of Constantinople upheld Gregory’s teachings about theosis, he was excommunicated in 1344. Three years later, he was consecrated bishop of Thessaloniki. Because hesychasm had come to have political as well as theological associations, the choice was not popular, and he entered his see with the aid of the Byzantine emperor. The Turks captured Gregory in 1354 and kept him captive for a year. He died in 1359.

Gregory believes that although God is ultimately unknowable, man can experience his energies through the sacraments and mystical experience, which are possible because of the Incarnation of Christ. The practice of the Jesus prayer opens one to God’s energies.

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT is dedicated to the triumph of the Church’s teaching over the “Iconoclasts” or “Destroyers of Icons.” The Second Council of Nicea, held in 787, clearly established the proper teaching concerning the veneration of images.

The Vesper service of this Sunday explains this teaching: “In assuming our body, You (O Christ) accepted all its properties. Therefore, we represent Your likeness and embrace it with the model in mind. We go up to Your love and, following the divine tradition set by the apostles, we draw from it the grace of healing.”

“Truly the Church of Christ received honorable adornment in the noble and holy icons of Christ the Savior, of the Mother of God, and of all the Saints. We lift them up with joy and gladness as the Church rejoices in grace, happily glorifying her God, the Lover of Mankind, who patiently suffered for her sake.” “As the tabernacle of the Covenant held the presence of God, so do the icons show forth the presence of the One we worship and revere. By venerating them, we never go astray. It is glory for us to kneel in true worship of the Incarnate Christ. O believers, let us then embrace His icon and cry out: “O God, save your people and bless your inheritance.’

CONDOLENCES:

REGULATIONS FOR THE GREAT FAST:

STRICT ABSTINENCE: (fast) is toobserved on Pure Monday, February 28^th-the 1^st day of the Great Fast & on Great & Holy Friday, April 15^th. This includes no use or consumption of all meats, eggs and dairy products.

SIMPLE ABSTINENCE: Thisforbids the use of meat on all Wednesdays & Fridays during the Great fast but allows eggs and dairy products.

PRE-SANCTIFIED LITURGIES will be celebrated every Wednesday @ Infant Jesus of Prague -6:00pm and every Friday @ St. Nicholas-4:00pm during the Great Fast. Pre-Sanctified Liturgies will also be celebrated on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week (schedule to be determined).

THE FATHER WELCOMES THE PRODIGAL TO THE DIVINE FEAST AS A SON.

ATHANASIUS: Then he shall get up, come to his father, and confess to him, “I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me like one of your hired servants.”

When he confesses like chat, he will be considered worthy of more than that for which he prayed. His father neither takes him in like a hired servant nor treats him like a stranger. Oh no, he kisses him as a son. He accepts him as a dead man come back to life again. He counts him worthy of the divine feast and gives him the precious garment he once wore,

Now there is singing and joy in the father’s home. What happened is the result of the Father’s grace and loving kindness. Not only does he bring his son back from death, but also through the Spirit he clearly shows his grace. To replace corruption, he clothes him with an in-corruptible robe. To satisfy hunger, he kills the fatted calf. The Father provides shoes for his feet so that he will not travel far away again. Most wonderful of all, he puts a divine signet ring upon his hand. By all these things, he begets him anew in the image of the glory of Christ. FESTAL LETER 7.

CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: It says that the tax collector “stood afar off,” not even venturing to raise up his eyes. You see him abstaining from all boldness of speech. He seems devoid of the right to speak and beaten down by the scorn of conscience. He was afraid that God would see him, since he had been careless in keeping his laws and had led an unchaste and uncontrolled life. You also see that he accuses his own depravity by his external manner. The foolish Pharisee stood there bold and broad, lifting up his eyes without a qualm, bearing wit-ness of himself and boastful. The other feels shame for his conduct. He is afraid of his judge. He beats his breast. He confesses his offenses. He shows his illness as to the Physician, and he prays that he will have mercy. What is the result? Let us hear what the judge says. He says, “This man went down to his house justified rather than the other.” COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY I20.

Zacchaeus Welcomes Jesus to His House.

Augustine: The Lord, who had already welcomed Zacchaeus in his heart, was now ready to be welcomed by him in his house. He said, “Zacchaeus, hurry up and come down, since I have to stay in your house.” He thought it was a marvelous piece of good luck to see Christ. While imagining it was a marvelous piece of luck quite

beyond words to see him passing by, he was suddenly found worthy to have him in his house.

Grace is poured out, and faith starts working through love. Christ, who was already dwelling in his heart, is welcomed into his house. Zacchaeus says to Christ, “Lord, half my goods I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times over.” It is as if he were saying, “The reason I am keeping back half for myself is not in order to have it, but to have something from which to pay people back.”

There you are. That is really what welcoming Jesus means, welcoming him into your heart. Christ was already there. He was in Zacchaeus and spoke through him. The apostle says that this is what it means, “For Christ to dwell by faith in your hearts.” sermon 174.5.

St. Remigus Bishop of Reims on Mt. 15:21-28

In these words is given us a pattern of catechizing and baptizing children; for the woman says not ‘Heal my daughter,’ or ‘Help her,’ but, “Have mercy upon me, and help me.” Thus there has come down in the Church the practice that the faithful are sponsors to God for their young children, before they have attained such age and reason that they can themselves make any pledge to God. So that as by this woman’s faith her daughter was healed, so by the faith of Catholics of mature age their sins might be forgiven to infants.

Allegorically; This woman figures the Holy Church gathered out of the Gentiles. The Lord leaves the Scribes and Pharisees, and comes into the parts of Tyre and Sidon; this figures His leaving the Jews and going over to the Gentiles. This woman came out of her own country, because the Holy Church departed from former errors and sins.

EPHREM THE SYRIAN:

The Light came into the world to give sight to the blind and faith to those who lacked it. When he approached the blind man, he cried out and said, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” The beggar’s hand was stretched out to receive a penny from human beings and found himself receiving the gift of God! “Son of David, have mercy on me.”10 He correctly understood that Jesus was the Son of David, David who spared the blind and the lame of the Jebusites.” What did he then answer him? “See, your faith has saved you.” Christ did not say to him, “It is your faith that has caused you to see,” in order to show that faith had first given him life and then bodily sight. the call to repentance.

chromatius: The voice of the Lord urging the people to repentance—the Holy Spirit made it known to the people that they might take heed, saying, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, as in the day of testing in the wilderness.” In the same psalm above, he made clear that he was urging the sin­ful people to repentance and showed the state of a repentant soul, saying, “Come, let us fall down before him and lament before the Lord who made us, for he is our God.” The Lord urges the people to repentance, and he promises to pardon their sins, according to Isaiah’s words:”!, even I, am the one who wipes out your iniqui­ties, and I will not be mindful of your sins. But you be mindful, declare first your iniquities that you may be justified.” Rightly then does the Lord urge the people to repentance when he says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” so that through this confession of sins they may be made worthy to approach the king­dom of heaven. For no one can receive the grace of the heavenly God unless one has been cleansed of every stain of sin by the confession of repentance, through the gift of the saving baptism of our Lord and Savior. tractate on matthew 15.3
