THE SABBATH IS FOR FREEDOM FROM SIN AND SICKNESS.

AMBROSE: Not understanding this, the ruler of the synagogue commanded that no one should be healed on the sabbath since the sabbath is an image of a future day of rest, days of rest from evil deeds, not from good works. It is commanded that, neither bearing the burden of offenses nor being devoid of good works, we shall celebrate future sabbaths after death. The Lord then is seen to reply spiritually when he says, “You hypocrites, does not every one of you on the sabbath day untie his ox or his donkey and lead them to water?” Why did Jesus mention another creature? He showed the future to his opponents, the rulers of the synagogue. The Jewish and the Gentile peoples would lay aside the thirst of the body and the world’s heat through the abundance of the Lord’s fountain. “The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master’s feeding trough.” The people who were fed on the food of common hay, which before it is plucked up is withered away, received the Bread that came down from heaven. CHRISTAMS MARKET:

On Saturday, November 25, 2023,

St. Michael Byzantine Catholic, 405 Robinson Road, Campbell, will be sponsoring a Christmas Market from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Admission is free. There will be vendors with holiday crafts, art, jewelry, décor and more. Baked goods and basket raffles will also be featured. All a great way to kick start your holiday shopping.

In addition, ethic foods will be available from the Hunky platter to individual purchases of pirohi, haluski

and holupki.

PHILIP’S FAST – FILIPOVKA:

On November 15, 2023 We start preparation for Christmas. We will have a Christmas Fast known as Philip Fast of Philipovka. All faithful have to abstain from meat of Fridays of equivalent penance.

BLESSING OF VETERANS:

Following this weekend liturgies, Fr. Michael will be blessing all veterans in of honor of Veteran’s day. Thank you to all veterans for your service to our great country.

DO WE SEE JESUS?

If you wish to honor the Eucharistic Victim, offer your own soul for which the Victim was immolated. Make your own soul all of gold. If your soul remains viler than lead or clay, what good does it do to have a golden chalice? Do you wish to honor the Body of Christ? Then do not disdain Him when you see Him in rags. After having honored Him in church with silken vestments, do not leave Him to die of cold outside for lack of clothing. For it is the same Jesus Who says, “This is my Body” and Who says “I was hungry but you would not feed me. Whenever you refused to help one of these least important ones, you refused to help me.” The Body of Christ in the Eucharist demands pure souls, not costly garments. But in the poor He demands all our care. Let us act wisely; let us honor Christ as He Himself wishes to be honored; the most acceptable honor to one whom we would honor is the honor which He desired, not that we ourselves imagine. Peter thought he was honoring his Master by not letting the Lord wash his feet; and yet it was just the opposite. Give Him the honor which He Himself has asked for, by giving your money to the poor. Once again, what God wants is not golden chalices, but golden souls.

BISHOP CATHOLIC CONFERENCE IN OHIO ON ISSUE 1

The Catholic Conference of Ohio firmly opposes Issue 1, which would enshrine the “right” to abortion in the Ohio Constitution. This extreme amendment endangers the health and safety of women, threatens parental rights, and allows for abortion through all nine months of pregnancy.

The Catholic Church has always advocated for and acted to protect the most vulnerable in society, including the indigent, migrants, and preborn children in the womb. We will continue to do so by explaining the harms Issue 1 poses to women, parents, and babies with Catholics and all people of goodwill across Ohio and encourage a no vote on this egregious proposal.

This extreme amendment would:

1. Threaten the health and safety of women

2. Threaten the rights of parents and put minors at risk

3. Allow painful abortions through all nine months of pregnancy

THE WOMAN TESTIFIES TO JESUS’ DIVINITY, AND JESUS TO HER FAITH.

EPHREM THE SYRIAN: Glory to you, hidden offspring of Being, because the hidden suffering of her that was afflicted proclaimed your healing. Using a woman whom they could see, he enabled them to see the divinity that cannot be seen. The Son’s divinity became known through his healing, and the afflicted woman’s faith was revealed through her being healed. She caused him to be proclaimed, and she was proclaimed with him. Truth was being proclaimed together with its heralds. If she was a witness to his divinity, he in turn was a wit-ness to her faith.

She poured faith on him by way of reward, and he bestowed healing on her as the outcome of her reward. Since the woman’s faith had become public, her healing also was proclaimed in public. The physicians were put to shame about their remedies because his power became resplendent and magnified the Son. SPIRITUAL WARFARE

St. Simeon the New Theologian

The whole warfare of the demons against us is waged with the one purpose of alienating those who obey them from the glory of God and the grace of the Holy Spirit. But, as I see it, we have already deprived ourselves of such a gift before they even attack us, because we have forsaken the commandments of God and have not been eager to seek Him with all our soul. Had we sought Him we should not have lived so idly and carelessly! Had we been concerned for the things of heaven we should not have shown such great eagerness for the things of earth. Had our thoughts been on things incorruptible we should not have gaped greedily after the things that are transitory and corruptible. Had we striven for things eternal we should not thus have pursued things temporal. Had we loved God we should not thus have turned away from those who guide us to Him. Had we sought to acquire virtues we would not have abhorred the teachers of virtues. Had we gladly embraced fasting we should not have complained of the lack of food and drink. Had we fought to gain control over our passions we should not have given ourselves unrestrainedly to pleasures. Had we a right and firm faith we should not have performed the works of faithlessness…Had we been found worthy to attain true love we should have known God.

MAINTENANCE UPDATE:

Our pavilion and shed roofs have been repaired and replaced with a metal roof. Thank you to all parishioners for to continued support to our maintenance fund.

TREAT OR TRUNK:

Trunk or Treat will be held NEXT Sunday, October 29^th following 9:00 am liturgy. Children of the parish are welcome to dress in their Halloween costumes and enjoy the fun. All parishioners are welcome to participate and bring/pass out their favorite treats. We estimate 20-25 children. Please park in the upper right parking lot. Trick or treat bags will be available in case anyone forgets their bags. 

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE:

The Annual Saint Nicholas Holiday Cash Raffle tickets to benefit the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Saints Cyril & Methodius are now being sold. Donation is $10.00 and the winning number will be taken from the PA Daily 3-digit number (1^st number drawn at 7pm) on Wednesday, December 6^th.

The fruits of pardon must be seen IN those pardoned. Ephrem the Syrian:

The Lord compared the priests of the people with him who was clothed in purple. Nothing is more hon­ored than purple clothing. He compared the dis­ciples of the cross with Lazarus. There were none lowlier than Lazarus was. He revealed the name of his beloved ones through Lazarus, his beloved one. He also wished to reveal the name of his enemies through the words, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets.” It is not the case that all those living are alive, or that all those buried are dead.

See, the more the rich man lived sumptuously, the more Lazarus was humbled! The more Laz­arus was made low, the greater was his crown. Why should he have seen Abraham above all the just, and Lazarus in his bosom? He saw him because Abraham loved the poor and so that we might learn that we cannot hope for pardon at the end, unless the fruits of pardon can be seen in us. If Abraham, who was friendly to strangers and had mercy on Sodom, was not able to have mercy on the one who did not show pity to Lazarus, how can we hope that there will be pardon for us? That man called him “my father,” and Abraham called him “my son,” but he was nor able to help him. “Remember, my son, that you received good things during your life and Lazarus evil things.”

Is the Veneration of Images Justified?

Some people reprove us for honoring images of the Savior, of the Mother of God and other holy servants of Christ. But let them think for a moment. In the beginning God created humanity in his own image. Why ever should we have such respect for one another, if not because we are made in the image of God? In Basil’s words, ‘the honor paid to the image is in reality paid to its prototype,’ that is to say, to what the image represents. Thus the Jewish people revered the Tabernacle because that, much more than the rest of creation, was an image of God. The making and the veneration of images are not a novelty. They are based on a very ancient tradition. God made the first human being as an image of himself. Abraham, Moses, Isaiah and all the prophets saw God, not in his true being, but in his image. The burning bush was an image of the Mother of God. When Moses wanted to approach, God said to him: ‘Put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.’ [Exod. 3:5] If the ground on which Moses saw the image of the Mother of God was holy, how much more holy will the image itself be!

THE HOLY BODY OF JESUS BRINGS SALVATION.

CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: Christ raised him who was descending to his grave. The manner of his rising is plain to see. “He touched,” it says, “the bier and said, ‘Young man, I say unto thee, arise.'” How was not a word enough for raising him who was lying there? What is so difficult to it or past accomplishment? What is more powerful than the Word of God? Why then did he not work the miracle by only a word but also touched the bier?

It was, my beloved, that you might learn that the holy body of Christ is productive for the salvation of man. The flesh of the almighty Word is the body of life and was clothed with his might. Consider that iron when brought into contact with fire produces the effects of fire and fulfills its functions. The flesh of Christ also has the power of giving life and annihilates the influence of death and corruption because it is the flesh of the Word, who gives life to all. OLD TESTAMENT LAW TRANSFORMED.

EPHREM THE SYRIAN: “An eye for an eye” is the perfection of justice. “Whoever strikes you on the cheek, turn the other to him” is the consummation of grace. While both continually have their criteria, he proposed them to us through the two successive Testaments. The first Testament had the killing of animals for compensation, because justice did not permit that one should die in place of another. The second Testament was established through the blood of a man, who through his grace gave himself on behalf of all. One therefore was the beginning, and the other the completion. He in whom are both the end and the beginning are perfect. In the case of those who do not understand, the beginning and end are estranged one from the other. In the study of them, however, they are one.

Therefore, this principle of a blow for a blow has indeed been transformed. If you strive for perfection, whoever strikes you, turn to him the other [cheek]. COMMENTARY ON TATIAN’S DIATESSARON 6.IIB-I2.

Our congratulations and best wishes to Bri Slemons & Joe Winiecki who celebrated the sacrament of Holy Matrimony this Saturday. LIKE PETER’S BOAT YOUR HEART SHOULD BE A CHAPEL

Vss. 1-3 – Jesus was teaching by the Sea of Galilee. The crowds were very large and pressing upon him. Nearby Peter, Andrew, James, and John were doing what fishermen did after a long night of fishing. They were washing out their nets and then setting them into the sun to dry. Jesus requested use of the boat. So Peter thrust out a little from land and Jesus sat in the boat and taught the people. The hills surrounding the lake helped make the area a natural amphitheater. The minute Jesus entered that boat it was not the same. Jesus entered the boat and the boat became a chapel. It was the residence, at least temporarily of God the Son. The minute Jesus entered your life when you were saved you were no longer the same. 2 Corinthians 5:17 You became new in many ways when you trusted Jesus as Savior. A key way is that your heart became a chapel or a temple. It is a place where God dwells. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Because God dwells inside of me my body should be a place where He is worshipped. God should receive my reverence, my praise, my thanksgiving and my prayers. Psalm 89:1,7, Psalm 103:1-2, 1 Thessalonians 1:16-18.
