HELPING HANDS:

All parishioners are invited to our “Helping Hands” Days. This year we are having two days to work on the parish grounds weather permitting. On Wednesday, May 8^th @ 9:00 am, we will be working on the pavilion. On Saturday, May 11^th @ 9:00 am we will be working on the church landscaping.  Lunch will be provided.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY:

ECF FAREWELL PARTY:

Our ECF children will be having a end of the ECF school year party at the church on Sunday, May 19^th following 9:00 am Liturgy.  

SIMPLY SLAVIC:

Simply Slavic Heritage Festival will be held in downtown Youngstown on Friday-June 14^th from 5:00pm-11:00 pm and Saturday, June 15^th from 12:00 (noon)-11:00 pm. Admission is $5.00. Children under 12 years old and younger are free. The event will include live music, homemade ethnic food, folk dance performances and more. This year also has the pivski, a European outdoor beer garden. Come and celebrate Youngstown’s Slavic community.

9:2 Who Sinned?

Why the disciples ask.

Chrysostom: They were led to ask this question because our Lord had said above, when he healed the paralytic, “See, you are well! Sin no more.” Thinking from this that the man had been paralyzed because of his sins, they say, “That other person was paralyzed because of his sins, but what would you say about this man? Had he sinned? How can you say that, since he was blind from birth? Have his parents sinned? Neither can one say this because the child does not suffer punishment because of his parents.” The same way we ask how it can be when we see a child suffering, this is how the disciples spoke here, not so much asking for information as being perplexed. 5:3 A Multitude of Disabled

RARE HEALINGS MAGNIFY THE MIRACLE.

THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA: A great crowd of ill people, struck with different infirmities, had gathered here hoping to be healed as if these waters might affect something because the entrails of sheep offered as victims to God [for the temple] were washed in them. And God also supported this belief by causing the waters to move sometimes. Since they believed that the waters were moved by divine power, they obtained the grace of healing after they had come down [into the water]. It was not that many people were healed at the same time but that the one who came down first obtained the aid afforded by grace, [This happened] in order that the facility of the healing might not diminish the effect of the miracle. And so, because they waited with great attention and anticipation for the movement of the waters, once they recovered their health, they might have a better memory of their healing, even though many lay ill there, he did not heal all of them. But, in order to show his power, he chose one affected with a very serious infirmity and who was hopeless already about his recovery. COMMENTARY ON JOHN 2.5.2-5.

16:2b They Went to the Tomb

The sequence of burial events. Bede: As to its being said in the gospel reading that holy women came to see the sepulcher “on the evening which was growing on toward the dawn of Sunday,” we should understand this thus: they started to come during the evening, but reached the sepulcher as the morning of Sunday was dawning; that is, they prepared the spices with which they wanted to anoint our Lord’s body on [Satur­day] evening, but brought the spices that they had prepared in the evening to the sep­ulcher in the morning. Matthew, for the sake of brevity, wrote this more obscurely; but the other evangelists how more dis­tinctly the order in which it was done. After our Lord had been buried on Friday, the women went away from the tomb and pre­pared spices and ointments for as long as it was permitted them to work. They then re­frained from activity on the sabbath, in ac­cord with they commandment, as Luke clearly reports. When the sabbath was over, as evening was coming on, the time for working had returned. The children had a wonderful time and loved the special visit from the Easter Bunny (Emma Boughner).

Commentary:  By Basil of Seleucia

Christ descended into hell to liberate its captives. In one instant he destroyed all record of our ancient debt incurred under the law, in order to lead us to heaven where there is no death but only eternal life and righteousness.

By the baptism which you, the newly-enlightened, have just received, you now share in these blessings. Your initiation into the life of grace is the pledge of your resurrection. Your baptism is the promise of the life of heaven. By your immersion you imitated the burial of the Lord, but when you came out of the water you were conscious only of the reality of the resurrection.

Believe in this reality, of which previously you saw but the outward signs. Accept the assurance of Paul when he says: If we have been united to Christ in a death like his, we shall be united to him also in a resurrection like his. Baptism is the planting of the seed of immortality, a planting which takes place in the font and bears fruit in heaven. The grace of the Spirit works in a mysterious way in the font, and the outward appearance must not obscure the wonder of it. Although water serves as the instrument, it is grace which gives rebirth. Grace transforms all who are placed in the font as the seed is transformed in the womb. It refashions all who go down into the water as metal is recast in a furnace. It reveals to them the mysteries of immortality; it seals them with the pledge of resurrection.

The great preacher of the late seventh century, Andrew of Crete, implores us: “…to meet Christ on the Mount of Olives … [and] let us spread before his feet, not garments or soulless olive branches, which delight the eye for a few hours and then wither, but ourselves, clothed in his grace, or rather, clothed completely in him. We who have been baptized into Christ must ourselves be the garments that we spread before him. Now that the crimson stains of our sins have been washed away in the saving waters of baptism and we have become white as pure wool, let us present the conqueror of death, not with mere branches of palms but with the real rewards of his victory. Let our souls take the place of the welcoming branches as we join today in the children’s holy song: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the king of Israel.

WHAT LOWLINESS ACCOMPLISHED.

CHRYSOSTOM: He erased the curse, he triumphed over death, he opened paradise. He struck down sin, he opened wide the vaults of the sky, he lifted our first fruits to heaven, he filled the whole world with godliness. Augustine: In saying, “When the Son of Man shall come, shall he find faith upon the earth?” our Lord spoke of that faith which is fully matured, which is so seldom found on earth. The church’s faith is full, for who would come here if there were no fullness of faith? And whose faith when fully matured would not move mountains? Look at the apostles themselves, who would not have left all they had, trodden under foot this world’s hope, and followed the Lord, if they had not had proportionally great faith. And yet if they had already experi­enced a completely matured faith, they would have not said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” Rather we find here an emerg­ing faith, which is not yet full faith, in that father who when he had presented to the Lord his son to be cured of an evil spirit and was asked whether he believed, an­swered, “Lord, I believe, help me in my un­belief.” “Lord,” says he, “I believe.” “I believe”; therefore there was faith; but “help me in my unbelief: therefore there was not full faith. Deflecting self-hate.

Augustine:

This precept by which we are enjoined to lose our life does not mean that a person should kill himself, which would be an un­forgivable crime, but it does mean that one should kill that in oneself which is unduly attached to the earthly, which makes one take inordinate pleasure in this present life to the neglect of the life to come. This is the meaning of “shall hate his life” and “shall lose it.” Embedded in the same ad­monition he speaks most openly of the profit of gaining one’s life when he says: “He that loses his life in this world shall find it unto life eternal. “letters, 243, to LAETUS.
