22nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The parables are intended to make us think and reflect. In the one we have just heard, two people lived side by side, a rich man in his great house and a poor man at the gate of the house. Yet, there was a chasm between them; whereas the poor man looked towards the rich man for scraps, the rich man did not look towards the poor man but ignored him. The parable seems to be challenging us not to let a chasm to develop between us and those who, although physically close to us, live in a very different world to the one we inhabit.

“Mr Rich — for he is often called “Divés” (Latin for “Rich”) — lived in his own priveleged world and made no effort to care for or to understand the plight of the beggar at his gate. We can all insulate ourselves in our own little worlds. The Lord challenges us to enter the world of the other and let the other to enter our world. That, in a sense, is what Jesus himself did. He entered our world and invites us to enter his world. We can do the same for each other. When we cross the threshold into the world of the other, into the world of those who are very different from us in all kinds of ways, we may discover that we not only have something to give the other but a great deal to receive as well.

21 Sunday After Pentecost

Collegeville Bible Commentary 8:4-21Listening to the word of God. This section on response to the gospel message contains two parables with commentaries; it climaxes with a pronouncement of Jesus on the basis of the proper relationship of his disciples to him. The parable of the sower (or more properly, of the sowing) appears in all threeSynoptics (Mark 4:3-8; Matt 13:4-8). The parable itself (vv.S-8) is open to more than one interpretation, but the commentary (vv. 11-15) describes what must have been the most common interpretation in the early church. The seed is the word of God, which will bear fruit in a receptive heart (fertile ground), but which may be ineffective in other soils for any number of reasons: the birds = the devil; no moisture = buckling under to persecution; thorns = cares, riches, and pleasures. In verses 13-15, the listener is compared to the seed rather than to the soil. Characteristic of Luke is the emphasis on perseverance (v. 15; see 21:19; Acts 11:23). After telling the parable, Jesus calls for attention to the deeper meaning of his preaching (v. 8), something he must have done often to shake his hearers into listening more carefully (see 14:35). When the disciples ask him to explain the meaning of the parable privately, he assures them that the “mysteries” (hidden designs) of God’s reign are revealed to them, and then utters the puzzling statement that parables are meant to keep others from understanding. Jesus obviously does not want his listeners, whoever they are, to be prevented from understanding (the reverse of the admonitions in verses 8 and 18 and of the parable of the lamp in verse 16). He uses the quotation from Isa 6:9 to describe the case that, in fact, some will see but not perceive, hear but not understand, because of hardness of heart. The phrasing is a form of Hebrew overstatement that translates awkwardly. It is even harsher in Mark’s version (Mark 4:12), which both Luke and Matthew (Matt 13:13-15) have softened.

THE HOLY BODY OF JESUS BRINGS SALVATION. CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: Christ raised him who was descending to his grave. The manner of his rising is plain to see. “He touched,” it says, “the bier and said, ‘Young man, I say unto thee, arise.'” How was not a word enough for raising him who was lying there? What is so difficult to it or past accomplishment? What is more powerful than the Word of God? Why then did he not work the miracle by only a word but also touched the bier? It was, my beloved, that you might learn that the holy body of Christ is productive for the salvation of man. The flesh of the almighty Word is the body of life and was clothed with his might. Consider that iron when brought into contact with fire produces the effects of fire and fulfills its functions. The flesh of Christ also has the power of giving life and annihilates the influence of death and corruption because it is the flesh of the Word, who gives life to all. May our Lord Jesus Christ also touch us that delivering us from evil works, even from fleshly lusts, he may unite us to the assemblies of the saints. COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY 36,8

Pray for All People

By St. John Chrysostom

The priest is the common father, as it were, of the whole world. It is proper, therefore, that he should care for all, even as God Whom he serves. For this reason, the apostle Paul writes, “I urge then, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings (lit: Eucharists) be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:14).

From this two advantages result. First, hatred is done away with towards those outside the Church, for no one can feel hatred towards those for whom is prays. And those who are prayed for become better because of the prayers, and they lose their ferocious disposition towards us. For nothing is so apt to draw people to the Christian teaching as love and being loved. Think what it was for those who persecuted, scourged, banished and slaughtered the first Christians to hear that those whom they treated so barbarously offered fervent prayers to God for them.

The Secret of the Peace We Need

Those who are engaged in spiritual warfare must always keep their hearts tranquil. Only then can the mind sift the impulses it receives and store in the treasure house of the memory those that are good and come from God, while rejecting altogether those that are perverse and devilish. “When the sea is calm, the fishermen’s eyes can see the movements of the fish deep down, so that hardly any of them can escape. But when the sea is ruffled by the wind, the turmoil of the waves hides from sight the creatures that would easily have been seen if the sea wore the smile of calm. The skill of the fisherman is of little use in rough weather. Something of the same sort happens with the soul, especially when it is stirred to the depths by anger. At the beginning of a storm, oil is poured on the waters to calm them, and in fact the oil defeats their commotion. In this way, when the soul receives the anointing of the gift of the Holy Spirit, it gladly gives in to this inexpressible and untroubled sweetness. And even if it is continually attacked by temptation, it maintains its peace and joy.

Deflecting self-hate.

Augustine: This precept by which we are enjoined to lose our life does not mean that a person should kill himself, which would be an unforgivable crime, but it does mean that one should kill that in oneself which is unduly attached to the earthly, which makes one take inordinate pleasure in this present life to the neglect of the life to come.13 This is the meaning of “shall hate his life” and “shall lose it.” Embedded in the same admonition he speaks most openly of the profit of gaining one’s life when he says: “He that loses his life in this world shall find it unto life eternal. “Letters, 243, to LAETUS.

16th Sunday After Pentecost

Collegeville Bible Commentary

Mt. 25:14-30 The talents (see Luke 19:11-27). The parable of the talents has many elements found in the preceding passage, but it concentrates on the judgment scene (vv. 19-30). The master (the Son of Man) goes away and distributes various sums of money to three servants. The Greek word that describes these sums is “talents.” The parable is the source of the English term “talent” as the description of a natural ability that can be improved by diligent practice. Though there are three servants in the parable, they really constitute two groups: the two who invest and double the amount, and the one who buries the money. The master is away for a long time, and suddenly he returns and demands an accounting (v. 19). The accounting is dearly the last Judgment. It involves rewards for the two servants who doubled the sums given to them (vv. 20-23) and punishment for the servant who did nothing (vv. 24-30). Constant watchfulness demands fruitful action and even boldness.

Mt 22:11 A Guest with No Wedding Garment

No wedding garment. Gregory THE great: But since you have already come into the house of the marriage feast, our holy church, as a result of God’s generosity, be careful, my friends, lest when the King enters he find fault with some aspect of your heart’s clothing. We must consider what comes next with great fear in our hearts. But the king came in to look at the guests and saw there a person not clothed in a wedding garment.

What do we think is meant by the wedding garment, dearly beloved? For if we say it is baptism or faith, is there anyone who has entered this marriage feast without them? A person is outside because he has not yet come to believe, What then must we understand by the wedding garment but love? That person enters the marriage feast, but without wearing a wedding garment, who is present in the holy church. He may have faith, but he does not have love. We are correct when we say that love is the wedding garment because this is what our Creator himself possessed when he came to the marriage feast to join the church to himself. Only God’s love brought it about that his only begotten Son united the hearts of his chosen to himself. John says that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son for us.” Forty gospel homilies 38.9.

Mt. 21:42 The Lord’s Doing Is Marvelous

Christ THE great stone.

Incomplete work on Matthew: Christ is called a stone for two reasons. First, because his foundation is solid and no one who stands upon him will fall victim to deceitful charms or be moved by the storms of persecution. Second, Christ is called a stone because in him is the ultimate destruction of the wicked, for just as everything which collides with a stone is shattered while the stone itself remains intact, so also everyone who opposes the Christian faith will himself be ruined, but Christianity will remain untouched. This is the sense in which Christ is the great stone. “Whoever falls on it will be broken to pieces, but it will crush those upon whom it falls.”17 It is one thing to be broken but something else again to be crushed, for sizeable pieces of whatever is broken remain, but whatever gets crushed is reduced to dust and utterly eliminated. The stone does not break those who fall upon it, but they break themselves who fall on the stone. Their destruction therefore is not attributable to the stone’s strength but to the violence with which they fall upon it. homily 40.
